On November 27, the Tianma Innovation Conference (TIC) 2023 took place in Xiamen/China with the theme of INNOVATION TO INSPIRE A WONDEROUS FUTURE.

OLED: Full screen — Low power consumption


OLED display with equal curvature height on all four edges

Currently, the pursuit of the maximum “screen-to-body ratio” is being driven by the relentless efforts of mobile phone display manufacturers. In the development towards a full-screen OLED display, the display is surrounded by a narrow bezel and the active area has a small bending radius. Tianma’s innovative “OLED display with equal curvature height on all four edges” does not only ensure that OLED mobile phone displays have four rounded edges with the same height, but also achieves the visual effect of a “true full screen”, a borderless view that provides users with a more immersive mobile phone experience. The depth of each side after bending is 0.8mm. The corner area wraps when it is compressed from both the long and the short side of the display. However, the deformation (= ideal length of the arc length of a corner minus the actual length (due to the wrapping)) is just 0.24mm. This is an industry-leading low level.


Low power consumption and reduced emission of blue light

With the increasing size and brightness of displays and the growing demand for high refresh rates (e.g. for games), the requirements for OLED panels that are manufactured in an environmentally friendly and low-carbon way have also increased. To meet this need, Tianma has developed an optical and electrical simulation platform to design optimal OLED device stacks and improve light emission efficiency.


Compared with the previous T7+ generation material system, the electroluminescence efficiency of Tianma’s new U8 material system is 11% higher and the voltage is 9% lower. This significantly reduces the power consumption of the OLED display. In addition, the new U8 material system achieves an industry-leading low level of low blue light content. Compared to the industry standard, power consumption is reduced by 8 % and the blue light component by 14 %.

Automotive: OLED with dynamic bending — LCD with quantum dot mini-LED backlight


Automotive dynamic bending OLED display 

Tianma introduced the technology of “dynamic OLED bending” for vehicle displays. The display can be flat, e.g. if the user wants to use it for in-car instrumentation, navigation or passenger entertainment. It can be curved and adapted to the user’s height and viewing habits. When the display is not in use, it can be bent and adapted to the shape of the dashboard. This makes it almost “invisible” when switched off.

Tianma has completed the development of the first domestic dynamic OLED display technology for the automotive industry. The product performance meets the mechanical strength required by vehicle regulations. The dynamic bending capacity is more than 200 thousand times.



Quantum dot mini-LED backlight technology for vehicle display

Currently, the commercialisation of mini-LED backlight technology in automotive cockpit displays is dominated by white light LEDs. The commercialisation of mini-LED backlight with blue LEDs and quantum dot film is on the rise.

Compared to white light mini-LED technology for automobiles, Tianma’s Quantum Dot mini-LED technology features lower power consumption, a wider colour gamut (NTSC ≥ 110%), better display contrast and a friendlier halo design.


Tianma’s has achieved a breakthrough in PM/AM (Passive Matrix/Active Matrix) mini-LED technology for the automotive industry. This includes meeting the reliability requirements of the automotive industry in order to achieve a failure rate of “zero” and high photoelectric conversion efficiency. At the same time, the European RoHS standard for cadmium content is complied with.

Notebook displays with high refresh rate using Oxide technology

Tianma introduces its latest backplane technology that complements a-Si (amorphous silicon) and LTPS (low-temperature poly silicon). It uses a metal oxide (called “TMOX” in this article) that has a higher mobility of charge carries than in a-Si or LTPS-based systems.

The development of the TMOX system has achieved several break throughs recently. TFT-backplanes, which are used in high-end notebook displays, achieve a response time of 3 ms and enable a refresh rate of WQ 240 Hz. The DCI colour space is 100%, the border of the display can be narrowed from 1.95 mm to 1.5 mm.

The main application is high-end notebooks for gaming.


Micro-LED display with higher resolution that the human eye

Tianma has been working hard for many years to improve the LTPS backplane design and Micro LED manufacturing process. In the quest for the ultimate clear and beautiful colour display, a new generation of Micro-LED technology has now officially made its debut. Tianma unveiled its latest achievement, a 1.63-inch active Micro-LED display that features high resolution of 403 ppi (pixel per inch). The new display exceeds the resolution of the retina, making it impossible to recognize individual pixels.

Possible applications include smart wearables and mobile devices.





PluidicTM Digital Microfluidic Biochips

By combining advanced TFT manufacturing processes and panel design technology, Tianma has developed Pluidic™ technology (panel-level microfluidics), an active DMF (Digital Micro Fluid). Compared to passive DMF technology, the throughput can be increased by more than 100 times and the accuracy by more than 1000 times, opening up completely new possibilities for digital microfluidics. The Pluidic™ O-Series microfluidic products, manufactured on an oxide mass production line, are the industry’s first publicly available DMF substrates.
